Wilhelm Ludwig Kriessmann - Luftwaffe Bomber Pilot

Born on October 11, 1919 in the small town of Feistritz in the province of Kaernten, southern Austria. He grew up the son of a school headmaster. Willi spent his youth exploring the natural wonders of the mountainous landscape and later was enrolled in secondary school for future teachers in the provincial capital of Klagenfurt.

In 1939, at the age of 18, he joined the German Luftwaffe after the Anschluss of Austria in 1938. From 1939 to 1945, he flew 93 combat missions as a bomber pilot in the campaign against the Soviet Union on the Eastern front, which included the Battle Of Kursk, during which his bomber was shot down by Yak fighters. He evaded capture, and was rescued by German troops. He flew nearly every major Luftwaffe aircraft including the Arado Blitz Bomber, the first operational jet bomber, and was awarded the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class.
