Boyds Bears is a delightful line of collectible resin and stuffed teddy bears that captured hearts from the early 1980s until 2014. Let’s delve into their charming history:
Founders: The tale begins with Gary and Tina Lowenthal, who owned an antique shop in Boyds, Maryland. Despite their shop’s profitability, maintaining a well-priced inventory of antiques proved challenging. In a stroke of creativity, they turned to crafting and selling antique reproductions. Their journey led them to sculpting with resin, initially creating a line of miniature houses called “The Gnomes Homes.”
The First Bear: In 1984, they crafted a 12-inch-tall stuffed bear with moveable joints, naming it after their newborn son, Matthew. These cuddly bears became known as “Boyds Bears”, paying homage to the town of Boyds, Maryland, where the Lowenthals lived and operated their business.
Plush Success: The plush bears and hares were an instant hit. In 1993, Boyds introduced their first resin bears, expanding their enchanting collection.
Enesco Acquisition: In 2008, Enesco acquired Boyds Bears. However, in 2014, Enesco made the difficult decision to place Boyds into hibernation, retiring the line. Despite this, Boyds Bears remain beloved collector’s items, cherished by enthusiasts even after production ceased.
Collectors’ Club: The official fan club, known as the “Loyal Order of Friends of Boyds!”, provided exclusive members-only items, an online newsletter, and access to a dedicated website. Sadly, in 2014, Enesco announced the club’s closure, marking the end of an era.
Awards and Accolades: Boyds products received numerous accolades, including Teddy Bear of the Year Awards, Doll of the Year Awards, Golden Teddy Awards, and recognition from the National Association of Limited Edition Dealers.
Stores and Closures: Boyds briefly operated stores, including one in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and another in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. However, these stores closed, emphasizing support for independent retailers over superstores.
