John DePol Engravings / Edgar Allan Poe

Two (2) signed wood engravings by American artist John DePol. Matted and ready to frame. Overall size is 11” x14” each. The engravings depict scenes from The Pit and Pendulum, the classic tale of terror by Edgar Allan Poe.

Both are hand-signed in pencil by DePol (1913-2004.) Part of a series he was commissioned to create as illustrations for a limited edition book of 150 copies that was published by the South Street Seaport Museum in 1991. Designed and printed at Bowne & Co. These engravings are probably from a small overrun and were never bound into a book.

DePol was a prolific illustrator and one of the master wood engravers of the 20th century. Along with his signature, he wrote brief notations in pencil in the blank margins (concealed under the hinged matting.) Sheet size without the matting is 8.5” x 11”. Image size of the first print is 4.25” x 7”, and the second 4.25” x 5”. Both prints are Fine. Small bump to one mat corner.
