This highly decorative wall vase in the form of a heeled shoe, or chaussure, dates back to 1875, and signed with the HB monogram used between 1883 and 1895. The hole from which to hang the vase is positioned on the inside of the heel. IMAGE 4. But lack of wear would suggest it has never been displayed on a wall.
It has been in our personal collection for 35 or so years, having been purchased from the then foremost authority on Quimper faience, dealer Valerie Howard in the 1980s. IMAGE 6.
This piece is finished in the typical Quimper polychrome colour palette, and decorated with two traditionally dressed Breton men playing a flute and a cornemuse, or bagpipes.
Condition: perfect, no chips or damage. Minuscule dots of yellow glaze missing on the yellow rim, the result of the firing process in the kiln.
