Children Dressed As Fish Seller & Customer - Gloves CdV Photo c1860s

This is a carte de visite, measuring approximately 4 x 2.5 inches (102x63mm)

It is part of a large private archive that features Great British and European fashion in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The photos in the archive were hand picked by the curator over a fifty year period with no two dresses being the same and indeed, most of the designs featured would have been unique.

The main emphasis was on women's fashion, as men's fashion of that era tended to be plain and boring whereas women's fashion was far more creative. In part, this was due to the clothes being made by an army of individual, local seamstresses, dressmakers and close family members, rather than being mass produced as they are now. This left a body of creative work that peaked with the flamboyance of the Edwardian era, a peak that would not be reached again until the 1960s with an explosion of not only fashion but also of music, design and art.

All the photographs that I sell, are genuine, original photographs
