This listing is for one LARGE authentic Ancient Coptic Period Egpytian Papyrus Fragment with Ancient Writing still clearly visible. There are strong remains of ancient text on one side of the fragment visible. Text and clearly readable letters visible on one side. Fascinating to have an authentic ancient fragment of a handwritten document on papyrus from ancient times. Circa 395-640 AD Byzantine / Coptic period Egypt. Ancient original writing remains very strong. Fragmentary as shown, includes display case so it is ready for display- can easily be removed from the display case for study. Remarkable for items of this age to survive but thanks to the climate and burial conditions some fragments survive. Fragment alone measures approximately 5 inches by about 2 inches. Measures approximately 6 inches by about 4 inches including the display case it is enclosed within. These Coptic period fragments can represent pieces of letters, documents, or religious texts, but are also very commonly writings of "magic" serving as incantations or "spells" meant to protect the home or individuals- some are even written as curses against others. The idea was that to write something was to make it so or manifest it. There is a long history in ancient Egypt of the belief that the power of writing could be a creative or magical empowered act.

The display case is VERY nice- the closure keeps the fragment secure but allows it to be easily and safely removed for study, if desired.
