1865 Union Civil War Original & Duplicate Discharge Papers Iowa 3rd Sergeant

These are the original and duplicate discharge papers for 3rd Sergeant in the Union Army Thomas J. Palmer. The duplicate papers indicate he was conscripted in 1861 as a private. He served for 3 years and then re-enlisted as a veteran in 1864, re entered service in March of that year, /and was slightly wounded in the head in July. The following November he was promoted to 5th sergeant. By April of the following year he had been promoted to 3rd sergeant eventually being discharged in July of 1865.
