Brief historical facts:

During the years 1830s there were so many counterfeit copper coins under circulation that in 1833 the government started recalling copper coins to replace them by banknotes, and also took the opportunity during this operation to cut the copper coins, meaning, demonetizing them, taking out of circulation.

The cut mark is known among collectors as “Talho da Lei” (or in English, “Cut of the Law”) and are also very popular and collectible pieces
