The massacre of Saint-Barthélemy is the massacre of Protestants started in Paris, on August 24, 1572, Saint Bartholomew's Day, prolonged for several days in the capital, then extended to more than twenty provincial towns during the weeks following. Due to a lack of sources, historians have long remained divided on the exact role of the crown, and historiographical tradition has made King Charles IX and his mother, Catherine de Medici, the main responsible for the massacre. They maintain today that only the military leaders of the Protestant clan were targeted by the royal order. On the morning of August 24, Charles IX ordered an immediate end to the killings but, overwhelmed by the fury of the people, he could not prevent them.
