The first FED2 cameras were modeled after the German Leica I rangefinder camera and assembled by hand in 1933 in the workshops of the Felix Edmundovich Dzerzhinsky Children's Commune of the NKVD of the Ukrainian SSR (hence the name by first letters - FED).

For more than two decades, the Soviet industry - mainly two enterprises - FED (since 1934) and KMZ (since 1948) - produced a camera - a copy of the second model of the German Leica (1932). After the war, Leica copied many countries, both western and eastern. In 1955, based on the FED camera, FED-2, FED-3, FED-4 are commercially available
