NGC F Roman Antoninianus of Valerian II AD256-258

Valerian II, son of Emperor Gallienus and Augusta Cornelia Salonina, became Caesar in 256 under Valerian's rule. Placed in charge of the Illyrian provinces, his youth led to guardianship under Ingenuus. Suspicious circumstances surrounded Valerian II's death in 258, prompting Gallienus to demote Ingenuus, triggering an attempted usurpation. Valerian II's brief reign highlights the challenges on the northern frontiers, emphasizing the need for local Caesars with authority, resources, and experience. This echoes Diocletian and Maximian's later approach with Constantius Chlorus and Galerius.
