NGC AE Drachm KINGS OF ELAM / ELYMAIS

Elam, also known as Elymais, existed as an autonomous state from the 2nd century BC to the early 3rd century AD, often under Parthian dominion. Located in present-day Khuzestan, Iran, it likely descended from the ancient Elamites. Renowned for skilled archery, it made history by assassinating Antiochus III the Great in 187 BC. Though their language remains unknown, Aramaic inscriptions have been found. Mentioned for its wealth in 1 Maccabees, Elymais's status as a city is debated, with its provinces including Massabatice, Corbiane, and Gabiane. Ultimately, it fell to Sasanian forces in the early 3rd century AD.
