NGC AE Tetradrachm of SOTER MEGAS (VIMA TAKTO ) - KUSHAN KINGDOM c.80-105 AD

Vima Takto, a Kushan emperor ruling around 80-90 CE, initially known as "The nameless King," gained his identity through the Rabatak inscription, linking his name with the title " Soter Megas " on his coins. The Kushans, originating from nomads displaced by the Xiung-nu, migrated south and westward, eventually establishing a vast empire spanning modern-day Afghanistan, Pakistan, and reaching into northern India. Led by rulers like Kujula Kadphises and Wima Kadphises, they expanded control over territories such as Bactria, Gandhara, and the Ganges Valley, with Kanishka being one of their most celebrated monarchs. Their dominance disrupted Parthian control, opening trade routes between the east and west. However, the Kushans faced challenges from Rome and eventually succumbed to the White Huns by the 5th century CE, as the Sassanians replaced the Parthians, marking a significant contraction of the Kushan empire.
