Carved wooden panel - Atoni - Timor - 38"

Carved in low relief, this Timorese wooden panel depicts the primal ancestor, believed in Timorese cosmogony to be symbolized by a crocodile, the creator of the island of Timor and the Timorese lineage. Crafted from hardwood, the panel bears a thick encrusted black patina, with some minor cracks and irregularities, yet remains intact and stable.
