I've been going thru my massive vinyl record collection these past few weeks and pulling out some LPs that I thought that someone else would want for their collection. I've been collecting records for over 45 years and it's time to pass some of them on to the next generation of collectors.

This week on Ebay we are offering up this fantastic Talking Heads 'collector' record, recorded Live at CGB's in New York City. A fantastic early show from just before their first LP was released.

THE TALKING HEADS "WORKSHOP IMAGE"
LIVE AUGUST 28, 1977 CBGB's NYC

I purchased this album in early 1978 at one of my regular NYC record store haunts.

This is a 2-LP set recorded at CBGB's It has a great set list, including several songs from both their first and second album, performed shortly before their first album was released. The sound is very nice, much better than what is typically found on these 'collector' records.

The record and jacket are still in decent condition for being 45 years old. The jacket is a deluxe yellow cover with great artwork. There's some remnants of an old price sticker in the top right corner of the jacket, and some mild creasing to the cover, but not bad.

The record labels are all custom made and printed with the song titles. Very cool and rare for a 'collector' record, which usually has blank labels.

The record claims it was made in Australia, possibly so, but I suspect that is just a bluff, and this album likely has nothing to do with an Australian Company.

This record was purchased in Greenwich Village NYC, in early 1978, at 'Record Revolution', one of my regular stops, and I suspect it was made by one of the regular 'collector' record labels like TMOQ, TAKRL, Pig's Eye, Ruthless Rhymes, Vicky Vinyl, or somebody like that.

The songs on this 2-LP live 'collector' record include:

Artists Only / Stay Hungry / The Book I Read
Happy Day / New Feeling
Warning Sign / Wash That Love Away
Pulled Up / No Compassion
Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town / With Our Love
Don't Worry About The Government
The Girls Want To Be With The Girls/ Tentative Decicions
Thank You For Sending Me An Angel
The Good Thing ('Who is it?') / I'm Not In Love
Love Goes To Building On Fire / Psycho Killer
Love Is All Around (Reg Presley)

The setlist included an endless stream of their early 'hits'. The Talking Heads first album was released in September of 1977, so these would all have been 'new' songs to the audience. They also performed songs that would end up on their 2nd alum, 'More Songs about Buildings and Food'.

If you’ve never seen the Talking Heads, it’s an amazing experience.

I first saw the Talking Heads 'by mistake' in the early summer of 1977 at CBGB's. I went to see the Ramones, and the Talking Heads were the opening act. Two very different bands!

I thought the Heads were fantastic; quirky, odd, and had great lyrics. Strange lead singer and a female bass player. Very NYC.

I fell in love with them and saw them several times in 1977, including at my college, Rutgers in New Brunswick. I was on the 'Concert Committee' back then and we got them to do a show at the Student Union, in what they called the Rose room. My college buddies and I thought they were great, and we thought we'd make a fortune for the committee, allowing us to hire more bands. We charged $1 for anyone with a student ID, but only about 500 people turned out. It was the day after Halloween and I think everybody was partied out. We barely broke even, but it was a fun show.

When you saw them live, you just knew you were seeing a great band, at the peak of their powers, and witnessing a 'moment' in rock that you would never experience again.

I also saw them open for Roxy Music's Bryan Ferry at the Bottom Line that summer.

The fall of 1977 was a great year for NYC bands and music. Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours' wasn't doing it for me, but the Talking Heads had their first album out, Television had released 'Marquee Moon', The Ramones released 'Rocket to Russia', Patti Smith's 2nd album was out, and the NY Dolls were, sort of, back in the clubs in the form of The Heartbreakers. Drinking age was still 18 then and it was a fun time to be a teen in the city. Lots of great memories.

Having seen them live I had to grab this album up when I found it in one of my regular record shops. At the time, I was grabbing up everything I could find by the Talking Heads. I knew they were great and that they were going to be big.

The Talking Heads line-up in the Summer of 1977 included David Byrne, Jerry Harrison, Martina Weymouth and Chris Frantz.

This is a fantastic show and a perfect slice of rock history.

Few bands had the ability to not only define a new genre and style of music, but also spread that style of music directly to the masses by playing live gigs, and leaving a lasting influence on multiple people and multiple bands. The Talking Heads were one of those bands.

This 2-LP set captures the best moments from that August 1977 CBGB's show and belongs in any Talking Heads, New Wave or rock vinyl collection.

A must have for Talking Heads fans and collectors.

CONDITION: I tried to show good hi-resolution photos of the cover, labels and vinyl in my pictures.

I purchased this copy back in 1978, and have taken great care of it since.

VINYL: The vinyl looks excellent. Clean and bright. Maybe 1 or 2 tiny hairlines, but No serious scuffs, palpable scratches, or dings. It looks great, and I'm sure you'll be very happy with it.

My photos don't do it justice. The album sides are one long track and it's hard to get my camera to focus without any 'contrast' in the  grooves. The vinyl is still in Excellent shape. Amazingly clean & crisp for a 40 year old 'collector' record.

The Deadwax has the simple 'LOONY 25 6 A, B, C, D' matrix marks, but not much else. See the full Matrix markings above.

I tried to show some close-up pictures of the vinyl to show how good it looks. I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

I haven't messed with it or cleaned it, other than my trusty 'DiscWasher' brush, in 40 years. It could use a good deep cleaning to make it even better looking and better sounding than it already is.

LABELS: This is pressed with very cool 'custom' labels that have the song titles. Unusual for a 'collector' record and a nice touch.

The labels are clean and bright. No marks or damage. The spindle holes are still sharp and clean, suggesting minimal playing and my careful handling over the years.

JACKET: As you can see from my pictures, this still looks very nice for a 40 year old OG copy, but does have some 'creases' and some old sticker remnants on the top right corner. This copy is still quite nice. The artwork is bold and bright. A nice survivor.

Overall, I'll call the whole jacket VG+, but the vinyl is beautiful and very clean.

This record has been sleeved and stored properly for decades, and is still quite nice for an original pressing. This copy is all original, and a real gem. I'm sure you'll love it.

** NOTE: I'm selling this rare 'Collector' record "AS IS" and "NO RETURN". It's rare and as described and I'm sure you'll be very happy with it.

I’m recently retired and downsizing and letting go some gems and rarities from nearly 45 years of vinyl record collecting. Check out the many other fantastic 45s and 33s coming soon to my page!

All records have been carefully evaluated and graded by me. I visually inspect all records under bright light, personally gently clean them with a soft cloth and then, if unsure, play them on a modern high-end turntable to get a true picture of condition. Please look at all the high-resolution pictures I added. They are all my own and are of the actual record being sold. The pictures are part of the description and can show small details, label variations, and condition better than I can put into words.

My grading is fair and honest. I have had over 3,500 happy and satisfied EBay customers over the years, with 100% positive feedback, and I have been buying/selling on EBay for well over 25 years, so please bid with confidence!

I'm a 0ne-man operation, this is a hobby, not my job. I do this for fun. I do this because I love music, love collecting vinyl and want others to share in that same experience. I take my time listening, researching, grading, listing and packaging. I will NOT sell any record that I personally would not want in my collection.

As you well know, packing and shipping rare records requires special care and attention, therefore, shipping cost within the lower 48 states is $5.00 on this item. If you would like insurance, or anything faster than Media/Economy Mail, please let me know and I can arrange it for you. I’ll work with you to make sure you’re happy!

I will gladly combine multiple records, or other items on my page, and make the shipping much less for you. I don’t inflate the shipping costs; they are what they are. I strive to keep them as low as possible. See my feedback for comments on my quality packing and shipping.

All items are packaged with sturdy cardboard mailers and appropriate padding. I take pride in my packaging and shipping and package all my records as if I were sending them to myself. I refuse to use cheap flimsy packaging material when sending my vinyl. I treat them as if they were my own and mail them the same way.

All orders are processed and shipped within 2 business days of receipt. We package and ship our vinyl records with the greatest care, using proper packaging to ensure that your rare and collectible vinyl records arrive in pristine condition.

Payments can be made by any of the multiple options that Ebay offers.

I will be happy to exchange feedback with anyone I complete a transaction with.

THANK YOU for looking and reading if you got this far.  -- JOHN
