In 1882, founder Sampson Mordan invented the first retractable pencil.
Based on this, in 1934, Leopold Frederick Brenner established Yard O' Red Pencil Company.
He invented and patented a pencil mechanism that could hold twelve 3-inch leads.
The company name means "1 yard of core." It comes from the fact that 12 3-inch cores make 36 inches (1 yard).
Yard O' Red's tradition has been cultivated through many years of family-owned operations.
Many of our pens and pencils are still highly regarded as handmade products that utilize 19th century designs and processes.
All products have a hallmark (purity certification stamp) that only those products that meet the British silver standard (925/1000) can receive from a public inspection laboratory.
In addition, the products are not coated with any finishing agents and are entirely hand-polished twice during the assembly process using abrasives that have been used for 150 years.
