This is a wonderful solid silver patch box handcrafted during the reign of King George III.It has a super bright cut engraved hinged lid and decorative borders. There is a blank cartouche on the lid which means that the lucky purchaser could personalise it should they so wish. It is tactile to hold and made from a good gauge of silver. During the fashionable Georgian period, beauty patches were an essential ‘must have’ item amongst their wealthy citizens. They would have been applied to the heavy makeup but throughout the day they would become detached and lost. These boxes would have been used to store replacements. They are extremely rare to find in silver form as most were made of stylish enamel. A truly wonderful item which was made by the respected Georgian silversmith, John Thropp.

Condition is excellent. There are no splits or repairs, just the usual light surface scratches and marks commensurate with silver which is 216 years old. The hinge is strong and the lid has a nice tight fit when closed. There is a minor knock on an edge but it is insignificant in my opinion and does not detract from the overall appeal. I have owned a few of these boxes over the years but this one is probably the finest of its type. It sits well, is functional, highly collectible and would compliment any collection. My photographs confirm condition, however further images are available if required.

Hallmarks are crisp and show Birmingham 1808, the maker being James Thropp. Established in 1808, the business operated as manufacturing silversmiths in Birmingham, producing a small range of products through to 1828.This is a superb example of the quality of their work.

The box measures 3cm x 1.8cm x 0.8cm and weighs 7g.

Many thanks for looking and good luck with your bidding. I will be listing more silver items from my private collection over the coming weeks and hopefully there will be something of interest for you.
