This is an attractive solid silver cigarette case made during the reign of King George V. Curved in form, it is smothered in bright cut engraved floral motifs and scrolls, a true reflection of the Art Nouveau period during which it was made. There is a cartouche on the front which contains engraved letters. They are probably the initials of the original owner and form an important part in the history of the case. It feels tactile to hold and is made from a decent gauge of silver. A super case made by the popular silversmith, IS Greenberg. In addition, it carries the Chester Assay mark. The office closed in 1962 and pieces from there are becoming rarer to find making them highly collectible.

Condition is very good. There are no splits or repairs, just the usual light surface scratches and marks commensurate with a piece of silver which is 111 years old.The hinge is strong, has a snap shut closing action and the lid has a nice tight fit when closed. There are a couple of minor knocks on the case but they are insignificant in my opinion and do not detract from the overall appeal. The original retaining straps are still in place which is rare to see. This is a highly desirable case which would compliment any collection. My photographs confirm condition, however further images are available if required.

Hallmarks are crisp and show Chester 1913, the maker being IS Greenberg (Israel Sigmund Greenberg).Established in 1884, the business operated from premises in Frederick Street and subsequently Great Hampton Street, Birmingham. As manufacturing silversmiths, jewellers and watch and clock makers, they produced a wide and varied range of products through to 1960 when they were acquired by Barker Bros. The quality of their work is reflected in this attractive case.

The case measures 8cm x 6cm and weighs a healthy 64g.
