Eric Lewis Black on
White Swirling “Doodles” Round Acoma Pot
This eye-catching pot was made the traditional hand-coiled
way by Eric Lewis with white Acoma clay who then painted it with what he calls
his swirling “doodles,” bold black designs reminiscent of some
tattoos. The strong graphics on Eric’s
pottery give them a modernist appearance; however, on close scrutiny you can
see that a variety of his designs are based on traditional Acoma patterns. This
entire pot is hand painted by Eric with swirling birds and clouds which he accomplished
with naturally derived mineral and vegetal
slips. It measures 6.5” inches
wide and 4.5” inches tall. The width of the top opening is 3.5” inches and he
signed the pot, “Eric Lewis.”
Born in 1978, Eric Lewis was born into an acclaimed family
of Acoma potters: his mother Sharon Lewis; his father Bernard Lewis; and his
paternal aunts Diane Lewis, Carolyn Concho, Judy Lewis, Marilyn Ray, and
Rebecca Lucario. Eric’s learning of traditional art began by observing family members
making pottery as he grew up. However, he says his design work was influenced
most by the art teachers he studied with in school. Eric began making pottery around
2000 but didn't become a full-time artist until about 2010. Eric Lewis pots are one of the more contemporary styles
you will find in young Acoma pottery today.
