1857-S Liberty Seated Quarter
PCGS graded AU55

Variety 2-C per Briggs' "Comprehensive Encyclopedia" for Seated Liberty Quarters.
Obverse 2 - the date even, distance-wise, from the rock.
Reverse C - the virtually embedded mintmark touching both the feather and stem.

Q. David Bowers, in his Red Book "A Guide Book Of Liberty Seated Silver Coins" states, "These are very scarce, even more so than the 1855-S, 1856-S, or 1858-S. As an anomaly, the 1857-S in AU grade is the most often seen San Fransisco quarter of the 1850s."

Interesting population note: PCGS Coinfacts suggests that 250 are estimated to survive in all grades, yet only 180 have been graded by PCGS and NGC combined (including resubmissions) giving a total rarity of R4 or R4-. The graded population suggests the rarity of AU+ pieces is R5+ (~45 survive).

PCGS/NGC graded population of 180 including resubmissions.
Mintage - 82,000
