LÜGDE 1921 "Flaming Easter Wheel" Complete Series German Notgeld

The city of Lügde has a unique tradition for Easter, which is depicted on the 1 Mark note in this series. Called Osterräder ("Easter wheels"), these large wooden wheels are loaded with tons of dry hay and lit on fire, then rolled down the hill in the dark. This makes for a spectacular light-show not unlike fireworks, and leaves a flaming path down the hill. There are nice videos of these on Youtube.
