Description

This is a stunning and rare large antique water lily plate from Villeroy & Boch in their wonderful majolica range dating to between 1883 and 1900.

The superb charger features water lilies with stems sinuously flowing against a striking turquoise stylised pond, typical of the Art Nouveau era. The condition is amazing for its extensive age with no apparent glaze crazing, just a few small nibbles to the edge from a previously used plate hanger and three kiln marks to the back from production.

The plate measures about 11.55 inches (29cm) in diameter and bears the VBS in an octogon (Schramberg 1883-1900) backstamp to the base with an impressed number 1.89 over 2.
