The Charente department is located in the South-West of France and belongs to the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Crossed from east to west by the upper and middle course of the Charente, it owes its name to the river, that is to say to a watercourse like the majority of French departments. The department was created during the French Revolution on Mars 4, 1790 in application of the law of December 22, 1789. It was formed around Angoumois and its antique capital, Angoulême, which was chosen to be the capital of a department which integrated Cognaçais to the west (from the limits of current Charente-Maritime to 'in Bassac) and South Charente with Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire, which were part of Saintonge, and to the east the Limousin lands of Confolentais, as well as some communes of Poitou to the north and Périgord to the south. Main cities: Angoulême, Cognac, Soyaux, Ruelle-sur-Touvre, La Couronne, Saint-Yrieix-sur-Charente, Gond-Pontouvre, L'Isle-d'Espagnac ...
