Items/papers concerning Bristol born Harold Earle Newman MM, who won the Military Medal and the recipient of the Mons Star, who served in the WW1 2nd Battalion, Grenadier Guards as a Sergeant, also served in the Bristol Constabulary between the wars - on the beat, then C.I.D. and eventually promoted to Inspector and in WW2 was a Home Guard Sergeant in ilton , Somerset, (11th Battalion) - also the Landlord of the Wyndham Arms pub in the same village. He won the Military Medal at Langemarck, Battle of Passchendaele, for carrying despatches through the German Barrage to the front line. He was a professional soldier who joined the 2nd Grenadier Guards in March 1909, eventually becoming a Sergeant . His number was 14294 and he appears to have seen much action including hand to hand fighting and was involved in the battles of Mons, Ypres, Festubert,Loos,Ginchy,(Somme), Pilken Ridge,Langemarck, Poelcapelle (Passchendaele), Cambrai and Arras. The enclosed copied newspaper cutting, “Mons to Armistice”, goes into more detail about him. The only surviving items and paperwork available, are all as shown in the included images - regrettably no WW1 medal group. Items and papers in this listing are -:

2 original photos and documents including - a photo as a WW1 Sergeant in the Guards and another as a Sergeant in the Ilton, Somerset, Home Guard (11th Battalion), also a reference for joining the Bristol Constabulary from a member of the town council, a certificate of character from the Adjutant 2nd Grenadier Guards, also his 1919 police notebook ( Constable PC58A), his WW2 HG Defence Medal and a medal slip. Another photo, which is a copied one, post war, shows him stood outside his pub - The Wyndham Arms, which he took over in 1940 after retiring as a Police Inspector, at the same time as serving with the Home Guard in the village. There is various other copied paperwork , including an extract from the 1939 register, also Newman family tree details about him and is all included and viewable in the images. He was born in St. michaels, Bristol , on 29th June , 1890, to parents -

Edward James Benbow Newman and Mary Jane Earle. He married Edith Roberts in 1920 and he died in 1957 in Weston Super Mare.In the enlarged group photo above (the final image) - on his Home Guard tunic, his Military Medal ribbon is just visible (the very first ribbon on the medal bar)  - It may prove worthwhile to try and trace the WW1 medal group through a popular medal search site like Medal Tracker, run by Token Publishing. Apparently a similar Home Guard group photo, including Harold was still hanging on a wall in the Wyndham Arms as at 2014.  There are 15 separate Public Members Trees on the Family Tree section of the “Ancestry.com” website, submitted by members of Harold’s family, the great majority will be contactable. I regret there can be no International posting. Postage will be Royal Mail 2nd Class Signed For.

An ebay member (Simon) has kindly provided a copy of the Bristol Police Long Service Medal Roll, showing that Insp. Newman received a bar to the LS medal for 22 years service, in June 1941, (aged 52 & not the usual retirement age of 50) Therefore it proves he didnt leave the police and move to ilton, until after June,1941, so please ignore the 1940 leaving date, stated in the above description. Simon also states, the very last ribbon shown on his ribbon bar was Harolds Police Long Service Medal. I will attempt to put the image of the Roll on the photo section above and if not, as I am unable to print anything for the forseeable, I will email this extra image to the successful bidder when the listing ends.
