[MORMONS] [MICHIGAN] Ancient and Modern Michilimackinac, Including an Account of the Controversy between Mackinac and the Mormons

Author: [STRANG, James Jesse]
Title: [MORMONS] [MICHIGAN] Ancient and Modern Michilimackinac, Including an Account of the Controversy between Mackinac and the Mormons
Publication: [no place]: [no publisher given], "1854" [ca. 1894]

Description: Softcover. Octavo, 48pp. a crisp, clean, near fine copy in the publisher's pale green side-stapled wraps, inserted into 20th century black cloth covers with cover label. Though the binding is not especially lovely, ti has nicely preserved the contents and original wraps. Mild discoloration near the spine, and some rust to the staples, but a clean, sound, pleasing copy. Though it bears the date of 1854 in Roman numerals on the front wrap, Howes helpfully notes that this is an undated reprint (ca. 1894). This is really the earliest obtainable edition of "King Strang's" own account of the Mormon colony on Big Beaver Island in Lake Michigan. Howes gives the 1854 edition the value of "dd," the highest valuation. Eberstadt sold the original manuscript in 1964 for the then-intergalactic sum of $7500. A significant piece of Michiganiana, Native American history, and Mormon history. Howes S1060 (aa); Flake/Draper 8496; Sabin 92674. Near fine.
