TRIBAL ART BASTAR - ORISSA

Ethnic object par excellence from the Orissa-Bastar region, in India

Dokhra metal in tribal art:

Objects made using this technique appear to be made from a single wire wrapped around a core of clay. Most people, seeing their pleated surfaces and spirals, imagine that the Dokhra is made with a thread. In fact, it is metal cast using the lost wax technique, a particularly difficult process.

We first prepare a rough representation of the object, in clay. Then we wrap it in layers of a soft wax that includes all the details the finished piece will have. The following day, we surround this wax model with clay. Then comes the heating. The wax melts and flows. It is replaced, in the hollow thus created, with molten metal which thus takes the exact shape of the drawings on the wax. The metal traditionally used is brass or bronze.
