The Palla is a square
piece of cardboard covered with white linen. It is used in the Eucharistic
celebration to cover the chalice, preventing insects or dirt from falling into
the Holy Blood of Christ.
When covering the chalice before the Eucharist, the
palla lies on top of the chalice cloth and the paten with the (unconsecrated)
host, but underneath the chalice veil and the bursa.
Pallas are often embroidered white on white with the
cross, the Mystic Lamb or another Eucharistic symbol. This looks nice, but
makes washing difficult. When removing the fabric from the cardboard, it must
be done carefully.
