An excellent humor anthology featuring the work of Mark Badger, Kyle Baker, Robbie Busch, Stephen DeStefano and Evan Dorkin. There are few people able to match the observational dissections of Baker or Dorkin's manic intensity, and Instant Piano has the best of both: Baker with chapters of a work in progress, and Dorkin with a very funny selection of three-panel throwaways and knowing satires about the obsessions of collectors. Mark Badger's strip about relationships loses out to Baker's hilarious and more concise musings on the same topic, but he's far better with other material, and Robbie Busch seems out of place, the little brother you've got to take with you. Stephen DeStefano is an enigma, with a fine adaptable art style that varies from Don Martin to 1930s cartoon strips: on top form he's every bit as good as Baker and Dorkin. Better with Sunday-lunch-table collections than with Marx Brothers-style lunacy, he's the quiet heart of the book reflecting the rest. Also great is each cartoonist's page of things that make life worth living.
