Hadrian, born in Italica, Spain in 76 AD, became Roman emperor from 117 to 138. He hailed from the Aelia gens and belonged to the Nerva-Antonine dynasty. Renowned for his commitment to strengthening the Empire, he oversaw significant building projects including the Temple of Venus and Roma and Hadrian's Wall. Named one of the 'Five Good Emperors' by Niccolò Machiavelli, Hadrian's interest in Hellenic culture was nurtured during his time in Athens. As emperor, he sponsored public works in Athens and granted Greeks equal representation in Rome, while his portraits reflected his admiration for Greek aesthetics.
