On first appearances this seems to be set in a 1950s-style futuristic city, but Astro City is in fact a modern-day American city inhabited by ordinary and extraordinary people. With his work on Marvels, Kurt Busiek created a niche for exploring the world of the superhero through the eyes of ordinary people, but Astro City offers more. We see the human side of superheroes, with their aims and personalities confidently and intelligently explored, and they're a marvelous set of characters, some with obvious resemblances to the icons of the comics world....If you had to live in a world full of superpowered beings you couldn't do better than to move to Astro City, but as you probably don't, settle in for a good read instead.
