Royal Air Force / Parachute Regiment Commemorative Cover
Operation Freshman
World War Two
19th November 1942
Cover Flown By The RAF To Norway In Hercules & Signed
Quite early in the war, the Germans were known to be working towards the production of an atomic bomb; it was thought they had made considerable progress in the production of one essential component - heavy water. In order to delay production, attacks were planned in 1942 on German research establishments, and specifically on the Norsk Hydro Plant at Vermork in Norway, a village sixty miles due west of Oslo and eighty miles from the coast. A raid by glider-borne troops was decided upon.
