In the late 17th century, Russian Emperor Peter the Great instigated significant economic reforms in response to extensive wars with Sweden, notably boosting metal mining in the Ural Mountains, a region abundant in minerals. This surge in metal production led to the establishment of major metalworking facilities, particularly in Nev’yansk and Ekaterinburg. The latter, within a decade of its inception, was producing the entirety of Russia's copper coinage. However, the massive production of copper coins, reminiscent of Sweden's ill-fated plate money, necessitated monetary reforms. Peter the Great introduced a new Ruble-Kopek system, the first decimal currency of the 18th century, to stabilize the economy. These large copper coins, alongside new paper currency, helped finance military and civilian expenses, including those incurred during the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774. Despite their role in restoring confidence in the monetary system, the proliferation of these coins contributed to inflationary pressures, becoming a burden on the Russian economy well into the 19th century.
