Ariadne, is a character from Greek mythology, daughter of King Minos and Pasiphae.

Here she is depicted in a state of distress as she was abandoned by Theseus on the shore of the island of Naxos.
The marble original of this sculpture was exhibited at the Salon of 1890 and was purchased by the State for the Musée du Luxembourg.

The artist Aimé Millet was born in Paris in 1819, studied sculpture at the Ecole des Arts-Décoratifs with David d'Angers, collaborated with the architect Viollet-le-Duc and it was in 1840 that his participation in the Salon began.
