Nabulsi soap is characteristically ivory color and fragrance-free.
It’s made of three simple, natural ingredients: local virgin olive oil, water and “geli” sodium hydroxide.
This compound is cooked for three days until a thick mixture forms. The mixture is poured onto large flat surfaces where it is allowed to dry before being cut and stamped with the company’s logo.
The soap is then stacked into geometric pyramids and dried for one-three months before being wrapped. Curing the soap this long rids the soap of excess moisture which makes it last longer and lather better (a creamy lather).
The soap is wrapped in waxed paper.
Workers can wrap a bar of soap in about three seconds, or 1200 bars an hour.

Nablus soap dates back to the 10th century when women would make their own soap to use around the home – it was used to wash dishes, clothes and skin. Even today,
the soap can be grated and used to wash clothes (great for those with sensitive skin).
Soapmaking is an ancient tradition in the Middle East. Palestine is said to be the birthplace of olive oil and commercial soapmaking. Soapmaking was a burgeoning industry in Nablus,
the agricultural center of Palestine.
It endured throughout the Middle Ages. It is said Bedouins brought the soap to the Mediterranean, where it eventually made its way to Queen Elizabeth I in the 14th century and became a favorite of European women who revered it for its nourishing and healing benefits.
In the 19th century, Nablus was supplying almost half of all soap to Palestine and countries around the world. However, by the mid-20th century, the industry was struck with natural disasters,
and foreign military occupation.
The number of soap factories decreased from 42 to three including al-Jamal (the Camel).
