Unique political cartoon item. Vintage "The Tweed Ring" cartoon drawn after Thomas Nast who did this piece for harpers weekly in 1871. 6" by 4". Thomas Nast amongst others were part of the reason The Tweed ring was taken down. The back of the item references application form, interview and art aptitude test at 364 brookline ave boston 02215. That location was a building built in 1929-30 for the Mass college or school of arts. The piece is drawn after Thomas Nast A group of vultures waiting for the storm to blow over-let us prey. This was shown in vol 15 page 889 of harpers weekly in 1871. William mavey Tweed-boss Tweed started as a NYC fireman and became elected to the house of Reps in 1853. In 1858 head of Tammy Hall central organization of democratic party. Later elected to ny state senate in 1867. Tweed formed a Ring of bigwigs who controlled NYC until 1870. They bribed and embezzled. Embezzled between 40 million and 120 million dollars. Taken down in part to new york times as well cartoons of Thomas nast amongst other journalism. Tweed was tried and convicted and given 12 year sentence. He was released after 1 year but was arrested again and sued by NYC for 6 million dollars. Tweed fled to Cuba and then Spain where he was captured and brought back to us and died in prison in 1878. The quality of this quick illustration is well done but sadly not signed. Likely a decent artist as this would have been before going to art school for the artist. The piece is in good condition for its age. Guessing to be from the 1930s. Unsure of the budweiser reference on Tweed unless suggesting he drank his fair share. Please look at the pictures provided for more details.
