Monet moved to Argenteuil in 1871 and witnessed the encroachment of industry and the urban expansion of greater Paris. In 76 he gave his address "as opposite to the station, pink House with green shutters" with its goods yards, the railway was a site of constant activity and clamour.

This is a painting from his window view from the savoy Hotel, looking downriver to Waterloo Bridge and upriver to Charing Cross and the Houses of Parliament . He was astounded by the dramatic and brilliant constantly shifting lighting and atmospheric effects. Especially in the winter sun when it struggled to penetrate the dense blanket of city smog that enveloped the city.
