Detail Description (refer to image 2): Versailles

This finely woven seventeenth century tapestry depicts the early hunting estate build by Louis XIII. However, his son, Louis VIX spent much of his youth enjoying the hunting estate and has through history become closely associated with it's (sic) development into the Grand Palais of later periods.

The hunt was the motivation behind the creation of Versailles as the ultimate royal residence of France. Hunting was the only form of exercise, apart from fencing, deemed suitable for the nobility.

Garlands of fruits and flowers with ribbons fill the side panels. The roundels of the crossed L's of Louisa XIV fill the side panels. The entire border of the tapestry has an architectural feel. Ionic columns flank a balcony draped with ornate Hermes scarves that were made popular in the late 1600s and are still manufactured today in France. The savonnerie rugs are topped by a large fruit bowl while a porcupine, the royal sign of Louis the XII, and a pheasant flank the side plinth blocks. The central hunting scene of men on horseback chasing the hounds fills the mid ground. In the distance, the slate roofer, brick and stone main lodge stands on a hill and is the focal point of the tapestry.

This tapestry is quite remarkable in it's (sic) use of vivid colors to help convey the lushness of the grounds surrounding the lodge. "The Royal Residences of the King" (Louis the XIV) is one of the twelve in the series. In this particular piece, we find the dignified and unquestionable glorification of all of the important residences in the life of Louis XIV.
