Beautiful PAIR of VERY large antique (circa 1900) patinated bronze art nouveau 'balaustro' vases with maidens and floral design in high relief by renowned Italian sculptor Francesco Flora (born 1857 in Rome, death unknown). The vases also include the original metal vase linings.

Each vase is part-painted in (original) gold highlights to accentuate the maidens' hair and the flowers. The vases are signed to the body by Francesco Flora, an Italian art nouveau artist known for his work at the end of the 19th century. Flora studied at the Academia di Belle Arti in Venice and worked in Venice and Naples creating various art nouveau artworks including sculptured paintings, statues (often featuring maidens) and funeral monuments for the rich and wealthy. Flora himself described the form of these vases as 'balaustro' (meaning 'baluster') but we might now describe them as having an ovoid, irregular bulbous base and a tall crown rim. They are of classical, organic art nouveau form, true to the early to mid part of the art nouveau period (1890-1910). Further information on the life and works of Flora are freely available via any internet search engine.

These vases are in very good condition but would benefit from light external cleaning and a good internal wash (I have left them in their original condition but they are quite dirty inside). There are no obvious signs of damages or knocks or restoration. There is a small manufacturing defect / crack to one rim corner (see pics) and although these vases are massive (5.5kg each and a huge 42cm tall) they are more crudely finished than the other pair of bronze Flora vases I have for sale (a rougher finish as if they'd come straight from the foundry without any finishing touches other than the painting), hence the lower price. These would make a beautiful statement piece in any grand home or as part of an art nouveau collection.

These are VERY large vases, each weighing around 5.5kgs (over 11kgs together) with a height of 42cm and a width of about 20cm at the widest point of the ovoid baluster form. Please bear this in mind as I will not accept returns on the basis that they are 'too big' or 'too heavy'.

Other forms of these vases were made, some in ceramics, some pewter and some other variants also in bronze (some of the latter of these overpainted in my opinion). Depending on the medium, the prices for vases identical to this varies widely but a very good condition bronze SINGLE vase can sell for over £1,500. I also have ANOTHER very similar and very large pair of part-painted Flora bronze vases for sale, with a more refined finish than these.
