Beautiful Richard Ginori / Doccia Capodimonte Quatrefoil Sugar Box & Cover c1880

A beautiful Capo di Monte style quatrefoil sugar box and cover, likely by Doccia (now known as Richard Ginori and owned by Gucci). Beautifully decorated with high relief moulded figures in a Baroque style. Hand-painted classical scenes include a chariot being pulled by mythical creatures and a farmer ploughing with oxen. The lid has a large apple-shaped knop with leaf. A matching teapot, with the same or similar scenes, is in the Victoria & Albert Museum collection in London.

In 1821, the original Capo di Monte porcelain factory in Naples closed and the Ginori factory of Doccia acquired their moulds and proceeded to make very similar pieces for the remainder of the 19th century.

There is an unidentified painted gold leaf mark to the base although this is over the glaze and may have been added later.

The sugar box is in very good overall condition although there is a chip to the rim of the lid and it appears as if half of the leaf to the knop has broken off. The latter 'damage' is slightly strange because there is gilding to the 'broken' edge meaning the knop may have been re-gilded later or the break was from original manufacture and the decorator simply painted the broken edge. Please see pictures for more information.

The sugar box is about 11.5cm tall (including cover),  11cm wide and 9.8cm deep. It weighs 265g.
