Thome played in college for the Illinois Central College Cougars and was a late round pick in the 1989 MLB Draft selected by the Cleveland Indians, and the first baseman/DH/third baseman made his MLB debut with the team in 1991. In addition to the Indians Thome has played for the Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, Minnesota Twins, and Baltimore Orioles. He is a 5× All-Star, a Silver Slugger Award winner, was AL Comeback Player of the Year, and was the NL home run leader in 2003. He is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, hitting 612 home runs during his career placing him 8th on the all-time list. He is currently president of the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association and coaches high school baseball in his spare time.
