SHAKESPEARE'S HOUSE, STRATFORD-ON-AVON.
The house in which Shakespeare was born is in Henley Street, and after many vicissitudes and alterations, was purchased by public subscription in 1847, and as far as possible restored to its original condition. it is a parcel-timbered plain building, which now stands detached, the adjoining house having also been purchased and pulled down. The ceiling and walls of the room in which the poet was born are covered with pencilled autographs and inscriptions, from all classes and every part of the world. The site of the house called "New Place," in which Shakespeare lived later, was also purchased in 1861, but the house had been pulled down in 1759 by the then owner, the Rev. F. Gastrell, in spite at a dispute about rates! The creature was obliged to skulk away in the night afterwards in order to avoid the popular indignation.
