string basket w/ ribbon decoration Fisherman Whalers Sailor made, these were made by both the Grand Banks fisherman and the Whalers. They were typically made as keepsakes for their loved ones left behind. The obvious choice of material was the ever present tarred fishing line, which all fishing vessels carried. This piece is as good as it gets condition wise, and measures 10" x 6" x 3 1/4". Even the ribbon which is typically rotted is in very satisfactory condition. No tears, holes or any other damage. As was often the case, this basket has a coat of varnish to help it hold its form. Even that is in great condition. This is truly one of the best of this form of folk art available due to condition and scarcity. This basket has been in my personal collection for about 35 years. Time to down-size.
