Mid 17th Century, Delft, Holland
Blue and white earthenware on cream background with hand painted images executed in cobalt blue, showing various farm buildings and landscapes.
Size: ~ 12.7 x 12.7 x 1 cm (~ 5 x 5 x 3/8 in)
In good condition commensurate with its age. With some scratches, edge chips, crazing of glaze and some plaster cement remnants on back and edges. Interestingly one of the tiles has sea shells used in the cement matrix. Please note the visible indentations in the surface of the glaze. These are remnants of nail holes in the clay when the were held in place during the early forming stages before firing. This characteristic feature is considered in authenticating the early Delft tiles.
Please see the high resolution images for the condition, and evaluate for yourself.
