Albert I, Prince of Belgium, Duke of Saxony, Prince of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and heir presumptive to the Belgian crown (1905-1909) was born in Brussels on April 8, 1875. He became the third king of the Belgians on December 23, 1909, after the death of his uncle Leopold II. From the First World War, he was nicknamed the Soldier King or the Knight King. Passionate about mountaineering and author of various important climbs, he died in a climbing accident in Marche-les-Dames on February 17, 1934.
