Tough, determined music of Norwegian composer Egil Hovland (1924 - 2013), who studied with Holmboe, Dallapiccola, and... Copland! From (four of) these five works on this out of print 1988 Aurora Contemporary disc I can see he learned more from the middle of those three than from the others. It opens with the orchestral work Lamenti, which is full of expressionistic crashes and still, crystalline moments, featuring a vocalise soprano in the last of its 3 movements. The Magnificat op/44 for alto, flute, and harp is murky and mysterious, while the Four Interludes for organ op.67 (the composer performs) is a mosaic of fragmented arpeggios and slow atonal meanderings over static chords. His seven-movement Wind Quintet op.50 is a strict twelve-tone work; only the final piece, Fanfare and Choral for Orchestra op.54b is tonal, an instantly likable work of bluster and pageant, a bit of Holmboe and more than a bit of Kokkonen. See photo for complete list of performers. Hovland got significantly more neoclassical as he got older, so don't let this disc dissuade you from listening to his 1986 Flute Concerto op.117 or even his 1972 Trombone Concerto op.76.

Disc, booklet, and case are in excellent condition.

About Jimmosk's CDs
I sell high-quality, little-known works, mostly 19th- and 20th-century. Many of the CDs are used, some are still-sealed, and most are the only one of that disc I have to offer. I sell a low volume of CDs, but that way I can listen to each (except the sealed ones :-) and describe the music to give you a better idea of what you're in for before you plunge into the unknown!
