This is an elegant solid silver vesta case made during the reign of King George V. Circular in form, it comes in a plain undecorated design. There is a dedication on the front which reads ‘WSC 1913 Tug of War’. This probably relates to the original owner and forms an important part in the history of the case. It feels tactile to hold and is made from a decent gauge of silver. A super case made by the respected silversmith, Horace Woodward.

Condition is excellent. There are no splits, dents or repairs, just the usual light surface scratches and marks commensurate with a piece of silver which is 112 years old.The hinge is strong and the lid has no gaps when closed. The strike plate functions as it should. The original gilt lining is still in place which is a good sign that the case has had a quiet life. This is a highly desirable vesta case which would compliment any collection. My photographs confirm condition, however further images are available if required.

Hallmarks are crisp and show Birmingham 1912, the maker being Horace Woodward. Established in 1850 by George Cartwright and Joseph Hirons, the business operated from premises in Great Charles Street, Birmingham and had showrooms in Hatton Garden, London. As the business expanded, new premises were subsequently acquired in Paradise Street and Vyse Street, Birmingham. As manufacturing silversmiths and electro platers, they produced a wide range of products through to 1919 when they merged into Adie Brothers Ltd.The quality of their work is reflected in this elegant vesta case.

The case measures 4.5cm in diameter and weighs 22g.
