This is a stylish solid silver vesta case made during the reign of King Edward VII. Rectangular in form, it has an attractive engine turned finish throughout. There is a dedication on the front which reads, ‘GC from AWW’. This was probably the original owner of the case and forms an important part in it’s history. It feels tactile to hold and is made from a decent gauge of silver. A super vesta case made by the respected silversmiths, Saunders & Shepherd.

Condition is wonderful. There are no splits, dents or repairs, just the usual light surface scratches and marks commensurate with a piece of silver which is 115 years old.The hinge is strong, has a snap shut closing action and the lid has a nice tight fit when closed. The strike plate functions as it should. It is pleasing to see that much of the original gilded lining is still in place…a sign that it has had a quiet life. This is a highly desirable vesta case which would compliment any collection. It is one of the finest of its type that I have had the pleasure to own. My photographs confirm condition, however further images are available if required.

Hallmarks are crisp and show Birmingham 1909, the maker being Saunders & Shepherd (Cornelius Desormeaux Saunders and James Francis Hollings Shepherd). Established in 1869, the business operated from premises in Bartletts Passage, Holborn Circus and subsequently Fetter Lane, London. As manufacturing silversmiths, goldsmiths and jewellers, they produced a wide and varied range of products through to 2021.The quality of their work is reflected in this super vesta case.

The case measures 4.5cm x 3.5cm and weighs a healthy 27g.

Many thanks for looking and good luck with your bidding. I will be listing more silver items from my private collection over the coming weeks and hopefully there will be something of interest to you.
