HARLEQUIN & COLUMBINE
Depiction of a carnival dancing couple: Harlequin kissing his Columbine's hand. The female figure in a fitted, tight-fitting blue top with a deep cut at the front, long trumpet sleeves, a voluminous blue skirt with large floral decoration in blue, violet and green, and a blue hat with a brim bent up into four points on the long, twisted blond curls, close behind her stands the harlequin in a white Pierrot costume with black hems, black ruff and cap, placing a dark blue cape on the lady's shoulders and kissing her hand.
The group is based on a black, arch-shaped, faceted round base, artist's signature 'Lorenzl' on the back of the dress, above the hem.
The model for the female figure was a photograph with the title: 'Mrs. Castiglione at a Viennese costume party'. This refers to Virginia Oldoini Rapallini, Countess of Castiglione (1837-1899), better known as La Castiglione, an Italian aristocrat who was the mistress of Emperor Napoleon III. of France became famous. She was also considered a significant figure in the early history of photography.
From 1856 onwards she posed for Mayer and Pierson, the photographers preferred by the imperial court. Over the next four decades, she commissioned Pierre-Louis Pierson to help her create 700 different photographs in which she recreated the signature moments of her life for the camera. She spent much of her personal wealth and even went into debt to pursue this project. Most photographs show the countess in theatrical costumes.
