THE HUMMEL H5 IS THE CURRENT (LARGER) VERSION OF THE HUMMELBIRD AND HUMMEL ULTRA CRUISER. Designed to accept pilots with more height and weight than previous versions, and to accept the full 4 cylinder V.W. style engine, with more horsepower.
A SINGLE SEAT, ALL METAL AIRPLANE, AVAILABLE AS A KIT TO BE ASSEMBLED BY AN INDIVIDUAL. THIS AIRPLANE WAS COMPLETED AND FIRST FLOWN IN OCTOBER 2011, WITH THE FAA AIRWORTHINESS CERTIFICATE GRANTED IN 2012.
USING A 4 CYLINDER VW DERIVITIVE ENGINE WITH DUAL IGNITION (THIS ENGINE HAS 1 MAG AND 1 UPGRADED ELECTRONIC IGNITION), THE H5 IS IN CURRENT PRODUCTION AS A KIT ($28,500 FOR AIRFRAME, NO ENGINE, PROP OR INSTRUMENTS), AND INDIVIDUAL PARTS OR ASSEMBLIES ARE READILY AVAILABLE FROM THE FACTORY IN MICHIGAN!
WITH CRUISE SPEEDS OF 115-125 MPH, THIS IS A CROSS-COUNTRY CAPABLE AIRPLANE, NOT JUST A PUDDLE JUMPER!
THIS AIRCRAFT HAS HAD THE OPTIONAL WING MOUNTED FUEL TANKS INSTALLED, FOR 21 GALLONS OF FUEL, GOOD FOR 4-5 HOURS OF FLYING TIME.
AS A SINGLE SEAT AIRPLANE, IT MAY NOT BE A FAMILY TRUCKSTER, BUT IF YOU WANT TO “SLIP THE SURLY BONDS OF EARTH” IN YOUR OWN PRIVATE DREAM SHIP, THE HUMMEL H5 IS ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO DO IT!
THIS AIRCRAFT SUFFERED DAMAGE WHEN IT LANDED HARD ON AN ASPHALT RUNWAY AND SPLAYED THE LANDING GEAR.
ALL 3 LANDING GEAR TUBES ARE BROKEN AND THE SKINS AROUND THE GEAR HAVE SOME DENTING WHERE THE WHEELS HIT THEM AFTER BREAKING OFF.
THE WING SPARS AND ATTACHMENT POINTS, ON THE CENTER SECTION AND THE WING STUBS THEMSELVES DO NOT SHOW DEFORMATION.
NOTE THAT ONE CENTER SECTION RIB AND 1 WING BUTT RIB HAVE DEFORMATION.
THE AIRCRAFT WAS ORIGINALLY WRAPPED IN VINYL, BUT THE RECENT OWNER (NOT THE ORIGINAL BUILDER, REMOVED THE WRAP AND POLISHED THE WHOLE AIRPLANE TO A BRIGHT SHEEN.
IT IS VERY STRIKING!
THE SMALL FUSELAGE WITH THE LARGE BUBBLE CANOPY HAS A DECIDEDLY FIGHTER-LIKE APPEAL, AS WELL AS EXCELLENT VISABILITY!
YOU WILL NOTE THAT THE MAIN WHEELS AND BRAKES WERE RECENTLY UPGRADED TO MATCO 600X6 WHEELS AND DISC BRAKES.
INSIDE, ALL ENGINE CONTROLS ARE INTACT, THE FLIGHT CONTROLS (STICKS AND RUDDER PEDAL ASSEMBLIES) ARE INTACT AND UNDAMAGED, AND ALL OF THE SWITCHGEAR ARE INTACT.
YOU CAN SEE THAT THE CENTRAL GLASS SCREEN HAS BEEN REMOVED AND IS NOT INCLUDED HERE.
THIS TECHNOLOGY HAS COME A LONG WAY IN QUALITY AND LOWER IN PRICE, SO YOU ARE NOW FREE TO INSTALL WHATEVER IS YOUR FANCY.
THERE IS A SMALL DENT ON THE LEFT SIDE FUSELAGE, BEHIND THE CABIN, ON THE SKIN, FOR THE WHEEL WHEN IT DEPARTED THE AIRPLANE. THIS IS VERY MINOR SKIN DAMAGE ONLY AND WILL EASILY PUSH OUT.
THE WOOD PROP IS BROKEN, BUT THE LARGE SPINNER, WHICH MATCHES THE COWLING, IS UNDAMAGED.
THE MODIFIED V.W. ENGINE AND IT’S ACCESSORIES SHOW NO PHYSICAL DAMAGE.
THE CUSTOM CARB HEAT BOX IS ALSO UNDAMAGED.
THERE ARE 40 H5’S FLYING, AND MANY MORE OF THE EARLIER HUMMELBIRD, BUT I DON’T RECALL EVER SEEING ONE IN THE “REAL” WORLD, ONLY AT OSHKOSH!
ALTHOUGH I LOVE THE ALL-POLISHED LOOK, IF THIS WERE MY AIRPLANE TO KEEP, I MIGHT BE TEMPTED TO GO WITH A PARTIAL OLIVE GREEN PAINTJOB WITH BLACK AND YELLOW CHECKERBOARD NOSE AND TAIL, LIKE THE P-51D “GUNFIGHTER”.
THAT’S THE FUN IN THIS KIND OF AIRPLANE, YOU CAN MAKE IT WHATEVER STRIKES YOUR FANCY!
WITH FULL FACTORY PARTS SUPPORT, THE REPAIR OF THIS AIRPLANE IS EASY, AND OF COURSE THE TIME REQUIRED TO DO THESE REPAIRS WILL BE A VERY SMALL FRACTION OF THAT WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY REQUIRED.
HUMMEL DOES NOT OFFER A “QUICKBUILD” KIT LIKE VANS DOES, BUT IF THEY DID, YOU WOULD EXPECT THEM TO CHARGE A SIMILAR 25% SURCHARGE FOR THEM, WHICH WOULD MAKE AN H5 QUICKBUILD KIT $35,000.
BUT A QUICKBUILD KIT DOESN’T INCLUDE THE ENGINE, STARTER, IGNITION, DUAL PLUG HEADS, ETC., ETC.
SO ADD ANOTHER $9,500
