This 'originally sold as a tobacco jar' piece with its original lid features Alexander "Ally" Sloper from the famous British comic strip Ally Sloper. Created by Charles H. Ross for the Judy magazine, Ally Sloper made his debut in 1867 and is one of the earliest British comic strip characters, infamously known as a red-nosed lazy schemer "sloping" through alleys to avoid landlords and other creditors. The jar is very well painted and decorated with Ally's iconic features and "Ally Sloper's Half Holiday" written on top of the hat.

In good condition overall given its age but some historic chips around the hat, and a couple of chips to the base. Some flaking of the enamel on the eyes.  See photos which form part of the description.

Including hat: 20 cm high x 13 cm wide
